Before we get started let’s define our terms.
What do I mean when I say “The Higher Self”? A lot of people throw that phrase around and I want to make sure you understand what we’re talking about.
First of all let’s take a look at the “non-higher self” or the ordinary, everyday self. This is the self that we normally take as being the be-all, end-all of who we are. It’s a combination our name, our body, our career, our education, our childhood memories, our relationship status, our likes, dislikes, fears, hopes, limitations and aspirations. It’s all the things we think, taken together, make up the definitive “Me”.
We assume that this “Me” is all we are. It’s taken to be self-evident. Yet we rarely question whether or not this is true.
Eastern spiritual traditions (and most mystic traditions from around the world, in fact) do not take this “we-are-the-sum-of-all-our-parts” definition of the self for granted. In fact, most of these traditions consider this view of ourselves to be anywhere from woefully incomplete to downright delusional. They claim that out of a state of ignorance, we create an illusory egoic self by hallucinating a subject and object that aren’t truly there.
And so begins the endless wheel of existence.
Our True Self, or our Higher Self on the other hand, is beyond parts, beyond conceptual labels, beyond the limitations of our normal small-mind thinking- the obsessive thinking that fixates on the existence of that which is “us” and something that is “other”. The Higher Self is the natural, spontaneous, ever-present intelligence, wisdom, love, and compassion of our true being.
This may sound transcendent, ethereal, and out of reach to most people but actually it’s not as far away as we think. In fact, it’s thinking that keeps us feeling so disconnected from it in the first place. Actually, we are never separate from our Higher Selves, even when we are lost in the dream-like state of the illusory “Me”.
Using hypnotherapy we can begin to wake up from that dream. By bringing ourselves into a natural, relaxed state of focused awareness, we allow ourselves to connect once again with the essence of who we are. Once that connection is reestablished we can find ourselves feeling more supported, at ease, and at home in the world. For many, it’s a powerful, transformative experience that forever changes their lives.
All that we need to begin this journey is an openness of heart and mind and a willingness to accept the possibility that we are more than we think we are.
