In our hyper-sexualized society, internet porn has become normalized, often viewed as harmless entertainment. Many believe that adult film actors simply enjoy having sex and getting paid, but the reality is far more complex and disturbing.
The Illusion vs. Reality
On social media, porn stars often portray a glamorous lifestyle, filled with wealth and endless sexual pleasure. However, this facade hides a dark underbelly of sexual violence, exploitation, and addiction within the online porn industry. Once you uncover the truth, you might reconsider supporting this industry with your clicks.
The Truth About Porn
Former porn actor Jan Villarubia confessed, “I lied to my fans. I led them to believe I lived a fantasy life that was far from the truth. I fed into their fantasies, saying I wanted sex 24/7 and loved what I did, but I was miserable.” Stories of violence and trauma from women who have left the industry are plentiful, while those still involved often remain silent due to fear of blacklisting.
Why Women Enter the Porn Industry
The common justification for the porn industry is that the women involved are consenting adults. However, consent is often given under desperate circumstances, not out of genuine desire.
- Fame: Some women are lured into porn with promises of future acting careers, driven by a deep need for love and approval often stemming from neglect or abuse.
- Money: Economic desperation pushes many into porn. With dependents to care for or struggling with addiction, they turn to the industry as a last resort.
- Sex: Some women enter porn due to an unhealthy obsession with sex, often linked to broader mental health issues. The industry exploits these vulnerabilities for profit.
Jenna, an ex-porn actor, described her experience: “It was torture for seven years. I was miserable, lonely, and eventually turned to drugs and alcohol. I attempted suicide. I wanted out but didn’t know how.”
Behind the Scenes of a Porn Film
The reality behind the scenes of porn films is often starkly different from the glamorous image portrayed:
- STDs: Despite regulations, the risk of contracting STDs is high. A 2012 report in LA found that 28% of 168 porn actors had chlamydia, gonorrhea, or both.
- Prostitution: Some porn actors are tricked into prostitution by agents, while others find it less physically demanding and degrading than filming.
- Drug Addiction: The abusive environment and personal trauma often lead porn actors to drugs. Many start young, making quick money but becoming prime targets for drug dealers.
- Sex Trafficking: The legal definition includes any instance of force, trickery, or coercion. Porn actors may be forced into acts they didn’t agree to or face threats from agents and producers if they refuse.
Regan, a porn actor, shared her ordeal: “I got the s— kicked out of me. Most girls start crying because they’re hurting so bad. I couldn’t breathe, was being hit and choked, and they didn’t stop filming even when I asked.”
The Demise of Pornhub
Pornhub, once the 10th most visited website globally, faced major backlash for hosting non-consensual and trafficked content. By January 2021, the site deleted 80% of its content and faced lawsuits and international investigations for child sexual abuse and sex trafficking.
The Need for Change
While there’s nothing inherently wrong with adult entertainment, the level of abuse and exploitation in the porn industry is unacceptable. Watching porn doesn’t make you a bad person, but it’s essential to be aware of the impact it has on the actors involved. As Gandhi said, we must be the change we wish to see in the world. By stepping back from supporting the porn industry, we can help eliminate the abuse and suffering faced by these individuals.
Reclaiming The Sacred
It’s time to rethink our consumption habits and show respect for the women exploited by the porn industry. Next time you consider watching porn, remember that the person on the screen might be suffering deeply due to the very content you’re consuming.
My 10 week hypnosis and self-empowerment program, Reclaiming the Sacred, is aimed at giving you all the tools you need to begin to address the conscious and subconscious causes of porn addiction.
