I named my private hypnosis practice “True Nature Hypnotherapy” because that’s really what it’s all about. It’s about reconnecting you with your Higher Self, what I call your True Nature.

What is the Higher Self?

Who am I?

It’s not a question that we often ask ourselves. Actually, it’s not something our culture really values at all. You can’t measure the answer with science (not really anyway). You can’t buy anything with it either. In fact, we look at people who really pursue the question as a kind of cliche: the idealistic hippy running off to India to “find herself”.

But let’s say we do begin to pose the question. Most likely we’ll start by rattling off our name, occupation, family status, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Certainly, these are labels that, in very broad terms, begin to describe who we think we are. But they are just that. Labels. They are not the essence.

As we start to take away the labels, we find that the “who” and the “I” become harder and harder to pin down. It’s like the proverbial peeling of the onion.

The Higher Self is beyond labels, words, and concepts. It’s the truth of who we are. It’s the truth of who we are underneath all the noise and the bullshit. We sometimes catch a glimpse of it when we’re quiet enough or focused enough, like when we’re gazing out at the ocean on a lonely windswept beach, or feeling the biting cold on our cheeks from the snow and ice as we fly down the mountain on an old pair of skis.

It’s that feeling of coming home, of that undeniable knowingness of being. I’m me we say, but when we try to describe it, it’s like water running through our fingers.

We may not be able to describe the Higher Self with words but it is possible to have an experience of it. This is what we aim for through the process of transpersonal hypnotherapy. We create the conditions so we can quiet down enough to begin to reconnect with who we really are.

Simply tasting this experience, even for a moment, can be deeply transformative and healing.

How do I connect with the Higher Self?

The first step to connecting with your Higher Self is recognizing that there’s no need to “connect” at all! That’s because we already ARE our Higher Self. We have always been that. We will always be that. We have simply forgotten.

Because our Higher Self is us, and because it is spontaneously present and infinitely loving, all we have to do is ask it to reveal itself to us.

This can be done in the state of hypnosis or not. The only requirement is authenticity, humility, and a genuine wish to heal and grow in alignment with our true needs.

What follows is a process of honest self enquiry and playful curiosity, in which we quickly discover that we are not as limited as we once thought. In fact, we begin to recognize that we have all the resources we need to create a life of abundance, joy, and deep meaning that has the potential to become better and better, day after day, year after year.

Recognizing the Higher Self can be a profoundly transformative experience in and of itself. Many people often have an experience of their Deep Intelligence, Unconditional Love and Compassion, Bliss, Clarity, Wholeness, or Pure Awareness. Whatever the experience this becomes the foundation for all therapeutic work to come.

The wonderful thing is that the relationship to our Higher Self can continue long after hypnotherapy. Again, this is about recognizing ourselves as the powerful, resourceful beings that we are and we can continue to rely on our inner goodness, wisdom, and love for the rest of our lives.
